In 2014, Marin Shakespeare Company was selected by the California Arts Council as the recipient of one of seven inaugural Arts-in-Corrections grants. This grant supports Shakespeare at San Quentin, as well as a new Shakespeare Program at Solano State Prison in Vacaville.
Shakespeare at Solano combines drama therapy techniques with acting instructions to give inmates the opportunity to study and perform Shakespeare, learn teamwork and positive goal-setting, practice self-reflection and self-expression, and build emotional competency and empathy.
The program at Solano serves both Level II and Level III inmates. The first Shakespeare performances at Solano State Prison were MACBETH (Level II) and JULIUS CAESAR (Level III) in May and June of 2015.
