AUDITIONS for Actors 11-18!

Marin Shakespeare’s Teen Company Fall 2025

Book by Joe Tracz
Music & Lyrics by Rob Rokicki
Adapted from the book Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

This dynamic musical adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book opened on Broadway in 2019. When teenager Percy Jackson discovers he’s a demigod, he and his friends embark on an epic journey to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt and prevent a war among the gods.  Actors 11-18 will have the opportunity to perform this exciting musical on MSC’s beautiful indoor stage at 514 Fourth St, with lights, sound, sets and costumes.

Casting 8-25 actors of any gender, non-singing roles available. Depending on the final size of the cast, actors may be cast in mutiple roles, so we are looking for versatile, creative performers who can build distinct characters and work in an ensemble. As long as they can sing the designated voice part of the character, actors of any identity, body type and ability may audition for and be considered for any role.   As the playwright, Joe Tracz, says, “The characters in The Lightning Thief are gods and heroes – and gods and heroes can look like any of us.”

What to prepare for auditions:

  1. One of the character monologues or lines from this packet.  You do not need to be memorized, but you should be very familiar with the text and have made some choices about the character.  If you are interested in a principal role, prepare a monologue.  You may be asked to read a different piece of text than the one you have prepared.
  2. A song.  Prepare the cut of “My Grand Plan” OR “Good Kid.” Choose the selection that suits your voice regardless of your gender. Alternatively, you may prepare a pop-rock or musical theatre selection of 30-60 seconds/ 16 bars that highlights your voice.  We will provide recorded accompaniment to the audition cuts from the show and a speaker for your recorded accompaniment for other songs, but feel free to bring your own speaker.  Please choose an accompaniment track without vocals.   If you are not interested in a role with solo singing, you may sing with a partner.  PLEASE NOTE: If you are interested in auditioning for the role of Percy Jackson please prepare the selection from “Good Kid”. If you are interested in auditioning for Annabeth, prepare the selection from “My Grand Plan”. Sheet music, recording and accompaniment can be found here.

All auditions, rehearsals, and  performances will be held at 514 Fourth Street in San Rafael.

A FINAL WORD ABOUT CASTING: Casting is a very complex puzzle that balances the needs of the production, the requirements of each role and the educational needs  of each student. Factors that may influence casting include, but are not limited to, a student’s schedule availability, focus, ensemble spirit, maturity, theatre experience and training, acting singing, dance and movement skills, as well as a student’s previous track record working on MSC productions, camps and classes, if applicable.  While MSC does not consider seniority to be a major factor in casting, older students have had more opportunities to develop leadership and theatrical skills and will often be cast in larger roles. Students and parents should be aware of the potential for disappointment if a student is not cast in the role they desire, and willing to accept the outcome of casting.
